Spay Day USA Toward the end of February each year a special day is set aside to remind us all of the importance of spaying or neutering our pets. Please look on our home page or in the Pocono Record in January and February for the next Spay Day USA. MAL plans to have a special promotion to commemorate Spay Day. Perhaps you can help by having a dog or cat altered; your own, a friend's, or sponsor an animal through the League's low-cost spay/neuter programs for those pet owners who cannot afford to alter their pets. If you are feeding stray cats, we can financially help with getting them altered. There is an income cap, but please contact us to see if you qualify. What is Spaying and Neutering? Spaying is the procedure used for female pets that eliminates the heat cycle or estrus. Neutering is the procedure used for male pets, which eliminates most roaming, associated with the search for a mate. Both Spaying and Neutering are relatively safe and painless operations done by a licensed veterinarian. The cost of the procedure depends upon the age, size, sex and general health of the pet. There are advantages to having your pet spayed or neutered. The attempts to find a mate will cease. Unwelcome visits by other animals in search of your pet will also cease. Spaying eliminates the possibility of developing uterine or ovarian cancer in pets. Neutered pets are less likely to develop prostate problems and testicular tumors. Neutered pets are more content and better behaved overall. They do not have a psychological sex drive so they feel no need to reproduce and are more quiescent. Also on average, spayed and neutered pets live longer lives. Start with 2 unaltered cats, one male and one female. If unaltered and left to breed, you'll end up with 12 cats the first year, 67 the 2nd year, 376 the third, etc. It's a cold hard fact that one unaltered cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in 7 years. One dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in 6 years. This adds up to millions of companion animals being euthanized every year in America's shelters. Help us control the needless proliferation of pets - have your pets altered and/or support MAL's low-cost spay-neuter programs. Rabies Clinic Our Rabies Clinics are held twice a year. One clinic in the spring and another in the fall. Locations and dates vary so Please check our home page or the Pocono Record for the next Clinic and its location.
